River of Light Community Lantern Parade to Illuminate Downtown Waterbury Sat., Dec. 8
Waterbury’s 3rd annual River of Light Community Lantern Parade takes to the village streets soon after dark on Saturday, Dec. 8. Burlington’s 20-person street samba band, Sambatucada, will lead the illuminated procession starting off at 5 p.m. at Thatcher Brook Primary School. The parade will make its way down Stowe Street to Main Street, turn left and head downtown to Park Row with a gathering at the end for singing at Rusty Parker Park. The roughly hour-long event will coincide with Revitalizing Waterbury’s annual Holiday Stroll where local merchants have extended hours and specials to encourage customers to do their holiday shopping in town. Many participants in the parade will be school children and their family members. Students made lanterns in November at special workshops led by artist Gowri Savoor and TBPS art teacher MK Monley, also organizers of the event. This year’s theme is “outer space” which will be reflected in the lantern creations. Lanterns range in size from simple hand-held paper mache creations to large pieces carried by two or more people. All are welcome to participate in the parade and bring their own battery-operated lanterns. Spectators are encouraged to line the parade route and hold or wear lighted or glowing objects to make this year’s event bigger and brighter than ever. (No fire light, please. Battery-operated LED lights will be available for sale.) Sponsors are GMCR, TBPS PTO, Ben & Jerry's Community Foundation. Up-to-date parade details atwww.ariveroflightinwaterbury.wordpress.com.
