Winter Carnival is this Friday!  5th and 6th graders will be at the Ice Center (reminder that skate rental is $4) and/or Central Vermont Gymnastics Academy while the 7th and 8th will be at the Big Picture Theatre watching "Chasing Ice".  All will be involved in outside activities at CBMS in the afternoon....remind your child to dress warmly!

8th Grade Parents - A few details for you regarding your 8th grader's registration for 9th grade classes at HUHS, and transition to Harwood for this coming fall.  
  • Registration begins the week of April 1st.  
  • Parent Information Night (for parents of incoming 9th graders) will take place in the Harwood Auditorium on March 27, 2013 at 6:30 pm.
  • A more detailed letter will be coming after February break outlining the steps that 8th graders and families should be aware of, related to registration and transition from CBMS to HUHS.

Harwood Youth Hockey Bantam Players will be holding a spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Friday March 1, 2013 at St. Leo's Hall, South Main Street, Waterbury, with servings at 5:30 and 6:30. Take out meals are available. The cost is $8 for adults, $5 for children up to age 12, and $20 for a family of 4.  The team will be putting the funds towards attending the Skip Brush Hockey Tournament in March.  The Bantam players from Waterbury-Duxbury are: Connor BeckJustin Cantwell, Connor Cameron, Ryan Garrand, Parker Merchant, Joey Raymond, Cole Rutledge, Cole Spaulding, Dean Touchette, Sam Towne, Clayton Wells, Eriks Ziedins.

Reminder to Gr. 8 parents - NAEP TESTING - Wed., March 6 (1st day back from break) 8 - 9:30 AM.  Please be prompt in your arrival to school this day, as this is important testing.  For more information about why this test is important, please see www.naep.org

Skiing-Riding at Stowe this Monday?  NO!  (program will resume on March 11th. The kid's passes are valid from February 25th through March 5th (excluding Saturday) up at the mountain...take advantage!

Cougar Kudos to the CBMS PTO for successfully hosting the 5th and 6th grade basketball tournament for both the boys and girls teams this weekend!  CBMS PTO meeting this Wednesday, beginning at 6PM in the CBMS office.  All are welcome!

Bake Sale this Tuesday at 1:30A trio of 7th graders have been baking away for their Change the World bake sale, benefiting Cookies for Kids' Cancer. Everyone should come enjoy a treat and support this great cause. Come empty the cookie jar and fill the donation jar!

Last chance to order your CBMS yearbook at the $25 price is Friday, 2/22 at noon. After that date, the price will be $30. You can place you order on-line or pick up a hard copy order form in the office and give it to Tom Matt. Order yours soon as quantities are limited this year!

May 1st is Vermont's state-wide Walk and Bike to School Day!  TBPS has done this for a few years....how about CBMS?  If you would you be interested in helping to plan a Cougar walk/bike rally to school that day, please let Tom Drake know!

BULLYING, CYBERBULLYING, AND TEEN DEPRESSION: A father’s story for parents & adults

John Halligan comes to tell the story about his son, Ryan, who died by suicide on Oct. 7, 2003 after being bullied online and at school by classmates in Essex Junction. He was 13 years old. This father’s evening presentation is appropriate for parents/adults only and will cover the lessons learned for his family regarding how to deal with bullying, cyber bullying, and teen depression. Parents will gain awareness and learn strategies to take preventive actions.


VERMONT’S MARIJUANA  ISSUE: CLEAR THINKING ABOUT DRUG POLICY

Possibly an evening presentation will be scheduled.
Prevention Day 2013, hosted by Prevention Works! VT and statewide substance abuse prevention coalitions, includes a presentation by Kevin Sabet who served in the Obama Administration from 2009-2011 as Senior Advisor at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). Currently a consultant working with governments, NGOs, the media, and other organizations on a wide range of drug policy issues, Kevin’s areas of specialization include evidence-based drug prevention, treatment, and law enforcement (both domestic and international), as well as the impacts of drug legalization, medical marijuana, and ideas for improvements to drug policy.


YOUR TEEN’S BRAIN: A WORK IN PROGRESS

Steven Dewey, PhD., Feinstein Institute neuroscientist and Times Herald “Man of the Year in Education,” brings his work as a scientist and his passion as a doctor to explain how early alcohol and drug use affect the brain, especially during the critical time of continued growth around adolescence.  His message includes factual information about addiction ranging from caffeine to heroin. He will speak to Montpelier students and staff during the day. At the evening presentation he will empower parents with the knowledge and confidence to guide their children through the adolescent years.

This Weekend!  CBMS PTO BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT - Thank you to the people that have signed up to help with the Basketball Tournament Feb 16 & 17th.  We understand that your time and resource are spread thin and appreciate what you are able to do.  Unfortunately currently we are very short on the help we need to pull this off.  We want to make it as easy as possible so if you prefer to email Stacy Grandfield, sssgrandfield@myfairpoint.net or Missy Semprebon missy@calmontbeverage.com please feel free to do that.  Of cource you can still sign up electronically by clicking here.
