Sept 27

NECAP testing for grades 5-8 begins next week (Oct 1, 2, 3), and continues the following week (Oct 8, 9, 10).  As on each and every day, thanks for ensuring that your learner gets a good night's sleep, eats a healthy and hearty breakfast, and comes to school ready to do his or her best!

This is our last weekend to sell Joe Corbi.  Order forms are due on Monday.  The PTO wants to thank you for all your efforts.  Without your help we would not be able to continue the programs and classroom assistance that we do.  If you have any questions please contact Missy Semprebon 244-1918 or missy@calmontbeverage.com

Next Friday (Oct 4th) we will be having our first Grades 5/6 Fun Night of the 2013-2014 school year.  If your form was lost before it got home it is available online- click here.  We would like to remind everyone that sending in your permission slip with the $5 really helps to shorten the line when kids arrive.  Also if you know your student will be riding home with someone else we would like that information on the permission slip if possible.  Of course if pick up plans change please send a note with your child Oct 4th.  All monies collected go directly to the 5th & 6th grade students only!  If you have any questions please contact Gayle Moskowitz at bgmosk@myfairpoint.net

The Boston Bruins hockey team will be practicing at the Ice Center on Tuesday starting at 1:30 in the afternoon.  As this is a large and unique opportunity, you have our blessing to take your child out of school that day.  Please use the E-Note form to let the CBMS office know if your child will be leaving early.

Picture Packets need to go to homeroom teachers asap! Picture Day is Friday, Oct 4th, but getting those packets turned in before that day is really helpful!

Mike Maloney is once again offering a Lego Robotics Club for beginners in 5th and 6th grade.  These classes will be held at CBMS from 2:45-4:15 on the following dates:  First session on Oct 15, 22, 29, Nov 5, 12. 2nd session on Nov 19, 26, Dec 3, 10, 17Based on the level of interest, the 2nd session will be another beginning class or a basic knowledge 1st level challenge class (for those in the 1st session or if they have outside experience already). This will be decided after we see initial sign-up numbers. Students can sign up in the CBMS office. Click here for more details.

International Walk & Bike to School Day - Wednesday, October 9  Students from TBPS and CBMS, their families, and any community members are invited to celebrate International Walk & Bike to School Day.  Everyone will gather at Rusty Parker Park in Waterbury at 7:00 AM to enjoy a delicious free breakfast provided by Waterbury LEAP and Waterbury in Motion.  At 7:10 AM two groups of walkers will depart -- one headed to TBPS, and one headed to CBMS.  At the same time, two groups of bikers will depart for those same two schools.  Each of the four groups will be chaperoned by adults.  All bikers must wear a helmet. Come enjoy this free community event.  Share exercise and the outdoors with local children, and show everyone that Waterbury and Duxbury are walking and biking communities.  For more information contact Duncan McDougall at Waterbury LEAP -- 802-477-2968 or duncan@clifonline.org

*Cougar Climbing Club*  We are looking at the possibility of forming a new after-school club at CBMS, for those who love to climb!  This club would be meeting on Mondays, tentatively beginning on December 2nd, and would meet from 2:30-4:30, ending in time for the 4:30 bus.  We are looking at a nominal fee for this club....amount still to be determined, and scholarships will be available. This club would utilize the climbing wall in the CBMS gymnasium,  with trips to PetraCliffs and outdoor climbing sites as skills progress. While we work out the details, right now we are looking for interest in this proposed club.  If your child is interested in this idea, please contact Assistant Principal Wade Cole (wcole@wwsu.org or 244-6100) to let him know.  Once we have an idea of numbers, we will then ask for "formal" sign ups.

Time to kick off Odyssey of the Mind!
Calling all returning OMers and anyone who might want to learn more about Odyssey of the Mind! OM is a fun, extra-curricular creative problem-solving activity that keeps students busy from fall until March at least. Our schools, particularly Crossett Brook, have participated in the state and national OM competitions for many years. Last year Crossett Brook had 3 teams and Thatcher Brook had one.  It’s time to figure out teams for this year – no experience necessary. OM teams typically have 5-7 student members and one or two volunteer coaches (parents mostly although teachers would make great coaches too!) OM is for creative students who like to design and build things; those who enjoy art, acting, storytelling and maybe even singing. If you like working with a group and especially enjoy a challenge, consider OM.
Anyone interested in being on a team, coaching a team, or just learning more so you can decide should come to a kickoff meeting next ThursdaySeptember 19, at 6:30 p.m. in the CBMS cafeteria. Students and parents from Thatcher Brook are also invited to attend this organizational meeting – so help spread the word!
Now in its 35th year in Vermont, OM includes students from kindergarten through college. Hundreds of teams from across the U.S. and many other countries take part in World Finals every year. They begin by choosing from a list of five problems, working during the school year on a solution, and presenting their solutions at state contests. Top-ranked teams qualify to compete at World Finals. Vermont’s state tournament will be held Saturday, March 22, at Champlain Valley Union High School. Problem descriptions are online at the main OM website. More information is on the Vermont Odyssey website.  Questions? Contact Lisa Scagliotti, 244-1444, or lscagliotti@comcast.net. Please call or email if you or your student is interested but cannot attend the Sept. 19 meeting.

September 1st

New CBMS Assistant Principal- Wade Cole has been hired as our Assistant Principal, and he begins this Tuesday.  You will recognize Wade by his height...well beyond 6 feet!  Wade grew up in Northern Vermont, graduated from UVM, and lives in Georgia, VT with his wife, who is a nurse at Fletcher Allen, and two boys aged 6 and 10.  Wade taught for two years at Milton Middle School, has worked at the Community High School of Vermont for the past nine years, and did his administrative internship at Georgia Elementary Middle School.  Thanks in advance for giving Wade a warm CBMS welcome!

The CBMS Website is alive, active, and current...lots of information for both parents and students, including team sites, calendars, parent handbook, photos of recent events, lunch menus, and more!  Click here to access the site, and do consider making it your homepage!

Notes from the Cougar Cafe:
  • Breakfast is served each and every day in the Cougar Cafe, beginning at 7:30AM
  • Lunch balances can be checked on PowerSchool.
  • If you want to add money to your child's food balance, simply send in a check (made out to "CBMS") or cash with your child.  That money should be given to your child's AG leader.
