Students will have the opportunity to explore the elements of a short story while also finding a supportive place to explore their own work and that of others. We will focus on the elements of writing short stories that make for vivid, effective writing across genres. Participants will also share their writing and ideas and discuss them in a positive and constructive manner, and we will do all of this while making new connections within our school!  Cost will be $30 for a 6 week session.  Dates are: Thursdays, Dec 4, 11, 18,2014 Jan 8, 15, 22, 2015.  Time is 2:20-3 pm.  Location:  Room 210, Prodigy wing.  Minimum of 4 students

“Girls on Track” Call for Coaches - After several years of offering a successful “Girls on the Run” program for grades 3-5 at TBPS, we are interested in expanding to offer at CBMS the “Girls on Track” middle-level program for grades 6-8. The primary focus of this 12-week program is teaching girls to face many challenges and obstacles that can affect their emotional and physical well-being. Once participants have a deeper awareness of their individual values, we look at the role of teams and healthy relationships in personal development. Lastly, the girls explore how they can positively connect with and shape the world. All of this exploration is done through a guided curriculum which incorporates running. We begin in March and conclude in early June. We are seeking caring, committed coaches for “Girls on Track” at CBMS. Training is provided and running expertise is not necessary. To learn more, please contact:  Lindsay Simpson, Waterbury Program Coordinator - simpsonlindsay@yahoo.com, 802-324-8877

Nov 14

Question: What is the average of 85, 82, 90, two absences, five late arrivals, three tardy homework  assignments, a failure to participate in class on four occasions, two note-passing incidents, and one unusually poor test performance the day the family dog died?

While it may seem mathematically impossible (How can you average together numbers and behaviors?), this kind of calculation happens all the time in schools. It’s called grading. Luckily, there are more accurate, equitable, and educationally useful ways to report learning progress and academic achievement. One approach is proficiency-based grading.

More to come.....

This will be a community-wide event for ALL AGES, and refreshments will be provided. Limited copies of the book are available at the circulation desk in the Waterbury Public Library.
*On Saturday, Nov 15th at Noon, the DCF Book Club will be discussing "Better Nate Than Ever", suitable for kids in grades 4 through 7. We'll have pizza with our discussion. Again, limited copies of the book are available at the Waterbury Public Library circulation desk - just ask!
