THANKS FROM OUR ODYSSEY OF THE MIND TEAMS – (click here for cool Facebook photos)  Three of our schools’ six Odyssey of the Mind teams recently represented Waterbury-Duxbury and Vermont at the OM World Finals competition at Iowa State University. Our local group included 19 students in grades 4-7 from CBMS, TBPS, and one Bishop Marshall student along with six parent coaches and several parent chaperones. It was the first trip to World Finals for everyone and it was an amazing experience to compete along with more than 830 other teams from 35 U.S. states and 15 other countries this year. Our teams all finished in the middle of the standings among approximately 50-60 teams in each creative problem-solving category.  The OM program raised more than $13,000 to pay for registration costs for team members and coaches who paid their own travel expenses. Literally dozens of individuals contributed along with many local businesses and organizations. The coffee and tea sale with Vermont Artisan Coffee & Tea netted more than $2,300. Generous grants came from the Marvin L. and Norma J. Hathaway Foundation ($2,500), the Rotary Club of Waterbury ($1,060), Ben & Jerry’s Community Action Team ($1,000), The Alchemist ($500), T.S. Peck Insurance ($500), Seventh Generation ($365), and Concept 2 ($350). Once again, Keurig Green Mountain provided a critical service by shipping the teams’ props, sets and supplies to Iowa.  Support from other local businesses included: Bargain Boutique, Bridgeside Books, Jazzercise Waterbury, Majestic Autobody, Stowe Street Emporium, The Reservoir Restaurant and Tap Room, Vermont State Employees Credit Union, Factotum, Waterbury Pharmacy, Waterbury True Value, Bob’s Ice Cream, Shepherding Hearts Christian Daycare. Help with various fundraising events came from Waterbury Parks and Recreation, Aubuchon Hardware, Crossroads Beverage and Deli, Billings Mobil, Pack & Send Plus. The CBMS and TBPS Parent Teacher Organizations also provided grants for the program to participate at the state level prior to World Finals. Nearly 50 students at both schools took part in OM this year. Teams for next year will organize in the fall. More information: http://www.odysseyofthemind.com and http://vt.odysseyofthemind.org/wp/.
