From the PTO: My name is Missy Semprebon. I currently have an 8th grade son, Ryan, a 5th grade Daughter, Emilee and a 3 year old daughter Olivia. I have been an active member of the PTO at CBMS for the past 4 years. I am very proud and passionate about that we have been able to accomplish in this time. We provide Fun Nights for 5th and 6th graders, after-school opportunities, education and support for parents with information nights about substance abuse and internet safety. We have shown the movies Speak out for Understanding and Race to Nowhere. We hold an annual International Dinner, organize staff appreciation week, 5/6 Boys and Girls Basketball Tournament, community nights like the Court Jesters and Lake Monsters Waterbury/Duxbury Baseball Evening at Centennial Field and fundraiser to support our teachers and provide funds for field trips and other items that are needed. The list seems really long and we are scaling back for the upcoming year.
Next at the Crossett Brook Middle School library we are holding our annual elect the new board meeting. We are losing three board members this year. The President, Vice President and Secretary positions are all open and we are looking for new parents and care givers who would be interested in joining. Hayley Fitzgerald would like to join as the Secretary for the upcoming year and I would like to keep the Treasury position. Currently we have no other interest that has been expressed to us. In this school year we were able to get our 501C3 status which opens up many possibilities for us but also requires a minimum of 3 board members. Without help we are going to be unable to renew our status and lose all the work that took years to accomplish. If I have to, I am willing to fill the President and Treasury positions but a Vice president is crucial to us continuing. I also think it is dangerous to allow the two positions to be combined as it cuts back on the amount of oversight that happens to keep the Treasury position accountable.
In the coming year we are cutting back from 3 fundraisers to 1 which will drastically decrease the amount of time and energies that we put in. I am also thinking that we can change from monthly meetings to every other month since fundraising will not be taking up so much of our time and the teachers will be taking back part of that duty. I am also open to ideas of how to make this more appealing to new members. Over the past school year we had one parent join us at our meetings. She was surprised that there were not more people present and had assumed that it was a more active PTO based on all we provide. She assumed that her voice wasn't needed. I would encourage everyone that has a student at Crossett Brook Middle School to come to one of our meetings, just to see what we are doing and let your voice be heard when it comes to decisions being made on your child's behalf.
On the other hand I am proud to report that we have enjoyed tremendous support from the parents, teachers and the community over the years. We could not provide many of the services we provide without the support of parents, caregivers and teachers. Fun Night alone requires 20+ volunteers to chaperone, provide snacks and organize. Whenever we put that call out there we are always overwhelmed by the support. The community and local businesses support us in fundraising and we deeply appreciate all they do.
I have enjoyed getting to know the teachers that my children are working with and it helps me feel more connected to what they do everyday at school. I have also met many parents of the children my kids like to hang out with, which makes me feel more comfortable when the kids are hanging out. Does any of this interest you? Summer Math Camp @ CBMS - Hosted by Tegan Garon - There are still spots open for the summer math camp at Crossett Brook Middle School, hosted by UVM junior Tegan Garon. The camp is open to any incoming 6th, 7th, or 8th grader, of all math abilities. The camp will run from from daily, and the cost is $90 for the entire week, which includes all materials. The camp is going to be a lot of fun, and will allow students to practice various math skills with their peers, while also receiving one-on-one support from a college student who is majoring in math education. Rapids Swim Team Registration - Register and meet the coaches this Friday, June 6, from 6-7 pm at the pool or at the first practice on Monday, June 23 at 5 pm. Registration is $50 per swimmer/or $85 per family, and swimmers must purchase a pool pass from the Waterbury Town Offices. Scholarships are available! The Waterbury Rapids is looking for swimmers ages 5-19 of all swimming abilities. We are a parent-run organization whose mission is to create a safe and caring environment for swimmers to increase their swimming skills, set goals to improve their own time records, persevere to beat team records, and have the opportunity to compete at their own level against the stopwatch and swimmers from the Montpelier and Stowe swim teams. Swimmers can also work to qualify for States at the end of the season August 2 and 3. Practices are held Mondays-Wednesdays and optional Fridays, 5-6:15 pm at the Waterbury Pool, and meets are Thursdays at 5.
