2morrow Night - Spread the WordHarwood Union Redesign Panel Presentation- Harwood Union Library - Thursday, January 30, 2014 - 6:30 P.M.

All people – students, teachers, administrators, parents, and boards, know what they want from school. Therefore we are seeking public participation in providing all students with a high quality learning experience designed to meet the aspirations of each student.

Recently our communities became highly engaged in a dialog about the Harwood Union Middle and High School Redesign Project. We are very excited about this dialog and, as a result, are providing an opportunity for our stakeholders to collaborate in a process to examine a redesign of Harwood’s 9th grade model.

The Panel Presentation will outline:
  1. The Educational Goals of HU
  2. Existing Programs
  3. The Flexible Pathways legislation (Act 77) and its impact on Harwood programs
  4. Next Steps
Q & A to be Included

Waterbury Winterfest is next weekend!  This 10-day extravaganza features lots of great kid-friendly events.  We hope you have an opportunity to get outside with your kids and watch or participate...  it's a great way to encourage being active even when it's cold outside.  Stay tuned for a "Kid Cliff Notes to Waterbury Winterfest" document coming soon, but in the meantime check the Waterbury winterfest website.

The Waterbury Cub Scouts are doing a recycling fundraiser, and they are looking for any old cellphones or MP3 players you might have laying around in drawers at home.  There are several companies that buy these, clean them up and resell them to other companies like Tracfone.  The scouts are also looking for empty laser toner cartridges and empty inkjet cartridges as they can get money for those as well.  If you have any that you'd like to donate, please drop them off in the collection box that is in the CBMS lobby.

January 6

Dear WWSU Families and Staff,

I am writing to let you know that at 5:40AM this morning I cancelled school due to severe icing conditions on the back roads. The afternoon forecast is also very problematic, with temperatures expected to drop. The radio and television networks had the message out by 5:45, but our internal emergency system went down for some reason, and we could not get the calls and emails you are accustomed to out as early as necessary. The system recovered and the message got out at approximately 6:25AM. I will need to investigate why this happened. We will do whatever we can to correct the issue. I am sorry for any inconvenience this unexpected technological difficulty may have caused.

January is certainly proving unusually difficult in the weather department; coming in like a lion. Oh, wait that's March, right? Thank you for your patience in these matters.

Sincerely,
Brigid Scheffert, Superintendent

  SUSTAINABILITY Bottle Cap Drive!

We all know plastic bottles are recyclable, but did you know our Materials Recovery Facility in Williston cannot currently recycle the plastic caps? Any plastic bottle cap under 2” wide must be thrown in the trash, adding more plastic to our landfills every day.

Student’s in Sustainability class would like to initiate an ongoing bottle cap drive to help address this issue.  We are asking CBMS families to collect their plastic bottle caps (all shapes, sizes and colors) and deposit them in collection buckets at school. Sustainability students will use the caps for data collection and recycled art projects including a bottle cap mural for the school’s lobby.

Small actions can make a big difference, thanks for your help!
