8th Grade Parents - Important Information regarding Course Registration for Incoming 9th Graders - As registration is in full swing, I would like to remind all parents that the student MUST be present at their course registration appointment. If the student is not present, I will need to reschedule the appointment for a time the student can be present. I do not have much extra time in between now and the close of registration (April 10th), so please be aware.  Still, the course registration appointments are only the first step in building a schedule for each student for next year. If a parent or guardian cannot attend, please know it is not a problem. I can answer questions or concerns once schedules are printed at the end of May. Students will also have opportunities to change their schedule if it does not fit their need.  Lastly, please know that all course registration appointments for HUMS students are in the School Counseling office at the High School. It is located to the right once you walk in the front doors of the High School. All course registration appointments for CBMS will be at CBMS.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this, please let me know.

Thank you,
Tara Cariano- tcariano@wwsu.org

CROSSETT BROOK & THATCHER BROOK ODYSSEY OF THE MIND TEAMS TAKE TOP HONORS AT THE VERMONT STATE OM TOURNAMENT!  Six teams of local students in grades two through seven took top honors at the Vermont State Odyssey of the Mind tournament last Saturday at Champlain Valley Union High School.

First place went to a Crossett Brook Middle School team of sixth- and seventh-grade boys; another first-place trophy went to a team of fourth- and fifth-grade girls from Thatcher Brook Primary School, Crossett Brook and Bishop Marshall. Three teams took second place in their categories: a group of seventh-grade girls at CBMS, a team of fifth- and sixth-grade girls at CBMS and a team of third-grade boys from TBPS who also won a special creativity award for their humorous depiction of France’s King Louis XIV. A first-year team of second- and third-grade TBPS girls won third place.

In all 39 local students (with 10 parent- volunteer coaches) took part in this year’s Odyssey competition. The teams finishing in first and second place all qualify to attend OM World Finals to be held in late May at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

Odyssey of the Mind is an extra-curricular creative problem-solving competition for students from kindergarten through college. In the fall, teams choose from a list of problems to solve and then work in their free time on their solution which they present at the state contest. Winners qualify to compete at World Finals along with teams from all over the U.S. and at least a dozen other countries.

Student-Led Conference feedback wanted!  Thanks for the many of you who came to CBMS this week to partake in conferences.  We would welcome your feedback on the student-led format!  Please click here to offer your thoughts.

7th Grade Parents - Update on next year's 8th Grade Math program Based on our broadened experience with the current revised edition of our 8th grade math program (Connected Math Project- version 3), together with our desire to give all 8th graders a chance at success in Algebra 1, we will be integrating the Algebra Seminar into the regular math classroom in 14-15.  All students will have the opportunity to earn credit for Algebra 1 based on classroom performance in 8th grade math, on regular but optional assignments and assessments given throughout the year (called "Algebra Extras", assigned via your child's school Google account, and facilitated by Tom Drake), as well as an end-of-course exam.  While we realize that all students may not choose to take the challenge of completing the "Algebra Extras", our hope is that many will choose to and thereby put him/herself into the position to take Geometry in 9th grade.  As a result of this change, there will not be a "placement exam" this Spring for 7th graders.  Questions?  Contact Tom Drake.

Parent of Grade 8 French students- please remind your child to bring in $2 for 2 baguette snack times!

8th Grade Parents- Please note that all 9th grade HUHS guidance meetings will be held at CBMS, and your child's attendance is required for these meetings.  Not signed up for a conference yet?  Click here to book a meeting.  Questions?  Contact 9th Grade Counselor Tara Cariano at tcariano@wwsu.org

March Cougar Cafe Menu is now online...click here.

New format for Core Team Parent Conferences this Spring...Conferences for all core teams will be Student-Led!  Some details:
  • First and foremost, your child will be leading the conference, so you need to bring him/her with you!
  • Wednesday March 19th is the date for conferences, and you will be signing up for one 45-minute block on core, in addition to individual conferences with Applied Academics teachers.   Timeslots begin at 3:00, and run through 8:00.
  • Sign-ups will be on-line, beginning March 8th and continuing through March 14th.  To sign-up, you will follow the link off the CBMS Homepage.
  • Conferences will be arena-style, with multiple conferences happening simultaneously.  All of the core teachers will be available during all conferences, and you can call any teacher to join the conference at any time.  All core teams will be meeting on the core wing, except for Team Quest who will meet in the library.
  • If you would like an individual conference with a core teacher outside of the student-led conferences, you can sign up for a timeslot on March 20th directly at your conference on the 19th.
  • The PTO is serving dinner on the 19th...bring the family!
  • Why are we making this change?  For multiple reasons, including: our direct and very positive experience with this format on Team Quest over the last two years; the opportunity to increase student voice and ownership in learning; to avoid the "speed dating" nature of quick, round-robin conferences; the sensibility of this format with the growth of e-portfolios at CBMS.
Wednesday Deadline:  Parents of 6th and 7th Graders- 7th and 8th graders have the opportunity to take part in an exchange with Harwood Union Middle School.  Details of the agreement can be found here, and the deadline to apply for the exchange for the 14-15 school year is March 5th.
