May 30

Step-Up Day is next Friday, June 6th.  A couple of points of note on this:

  • Placement letters for next year's 5th and 7th graders will be mailed out on Monday, and students will "step up" at CBMS from 9:30-11:00 on Friday.  Current 4th graders will come over to CBMS at 9, and will stay for lunch and depart at 11:30 back to TBPS.
  • On Friday, 8th graders should arrive directly to HUHS by 8AM, either via bus or car.  They can purchase lunch tickets for that day at the CBMS office next week, and the amount will simply be billed to their normal lunch account. On the menu is Stromboli, Fresh Vegetable or Ham, Salami, Pepperoni and Cheese, Fresh Fruit and Tossed Salad
  • 8th graders will be bussed back to CBMS at 2PM that day, and will depart from CBMS as normal.

Titan IDU food drive. The Duxbury Elf Shelf needs our help. So from Monday, June 2nd, to Tuesday June 10th, there is a food drive. Make sure you bring things into you AG. The AG with the most food gets a cupcake and brownie party. The party will be the following week on the 17th which is a Friday. The acceptable items are: non-perishable items, like canned fruits and veggies, toilet paper, sugar, flour, paper towels, peanut butter, and jelly. Bring in the food! For more information contact Libby Brusa.

Short shorts! It is clear that as the temperature goes up so do the hemlines of the shorts worn by many of the CBMS girls.  Think about how clothes can be a distraction to learning, and thanks for helping to keep distractions around clothing to a minimum!

The sun is getting warmer and the days longer.  As everyone is making their summer plans the CBMS PTO is trying to ensure we have an active PTO for the upcoming year.  We are trying to make plans for the new year but we need your help.  We are still looking for board members!  It is vital that we have at least one more member or we lose our 501C3 status.  We are making changes to the PTO and we will only be doing 1 fundraiser in the upcoming year.    This will dramatically decrease the time commitment and will free us up to organize Fun Nights, the basketball tournament for 5th and 6th grade, after-school programs and other enrichment and educational events.  Currently we have some interest in the Secretary position and I would like to remain in the Treasury position :)  We are currently in need of a President and Vice President position.  If you have any interest and would like to hear more about the positions please feel free to reach out to Carrie Dessureau (outgoing President) at dessureauc@yahoo.com, Gayle Moskowitz (outgoing Vice President) at bgmosk@myfairpoint.net or Missy Semprebon (current treasurer) at 373-4546 or missy@calmontbeverage.com  Thank you for all your help this year and am looking forward to another great year with the CBMS PTO!

We have a reported case of chicken pox in TBPS.  Chicken pox is a viral disease that is very contagious. Symptoms may begin as headache, fatigue and muscle aches progressing to a fever as the rash begins to develop. If your child has had chicken pox, they may not return to school until all spots have crusted over. If your child has not been vaccinated against this disease, you may consider speaking with your child's physician for recommendations. Follow this link to the CDC for additional information about chickenpox.

Staff Appreciation Week Thanks- Your children feed our minds and hearts each day, and this week staff bellies were kept full each day thanks to your generous efforts...we feel appreciated, and we thank you!

WDSD School Board meeting this coming Tuesday- 6PM in the TBPS Library.  For the agenda and supporting documents,  click here.

The CBMS PTO is searching for parent volunteers to step forward and lead us through the upcoming 2014-15 year.  It is time for Gayle, Jennifer, and me to move on and open the doors to new leaders and ideas.  We are searching for a President, Vice President and Secretary.

This past year we achieved our 4 year dream of  501c3 status, allowing us to apply for grants and receive matching donations.  In order to maintain this active status we must have a minimum of 3 board members.  Without these members the CBMS PTO will cease to exist.

Our mission is to enrich the lives of children, enhance the educational process, build community, and support an open network of communication between the school and community.  The CBMS PTO has worked diligently at fulfilling this mission.  Educational opportunities for parents and students have been provided through internet safety, bullying and the Race to Nowhere.  Afterschool enrichment programs have been offered through lego robotics, Spanish, fly fishing, fencing or swimming.  We have brought our community together through Dinner is Served, the International Dinner, the 5th/6th grade basketball tournament and our most recent Court Jesters.

I feel fortunate to have been a part of  the PTO for the past 2 years.  I have had the opportunity to work with some amazingly committed staff members and parents through fundraising and coordination of events.  With your help and fundraising we have supported 5th/6th grade fun nights, sleds for Quest, field trips and upcoming events for each of the teams in 5th through 8th grade.  It has been a fantastic journey.  Now it is your opportunity to direct the vision of the PTO to support the students and staff in 2014-15.

We invite you to join us at our next CBMS PTO board meeting, May 14th, when we will be electing new officers, or at our annual meeting on June 11, when the new officers will be transitioned in.  Any questions can be directed to me at dessureauc@yahoo.com or by phone 244-7262.

Thank you,

Carrie Dessureau
Outgoing PTO President

“The Internet is forever, and people don’t realize that,” said Nico Sell, a security expert and one of the founders of a rival mobile app called Wickr that also lets people send self-destructing messages. “You think you can delete a tweet or a Facebook post, but it doesn’t go away. Most people don’t know how hard it is to make a message disappear.”  Click here for the full story.

Did you order a hanging basket from Evergreen Gardens through the PTO Plant Sale? They are available for pick up this weekend! The other items will be available next weekend.  Also look for information about Waterbury/Duxbury night at the Lake Monsters coming home in back packs. Vermont Walk & Roll to School Day -On Wednesday, May 7th, local students, parents, and community members will participate in Vermont Walk & Roll to School Day in Waterbury.  All ages and all community members are welcome!  At 7AM everyone will gather at Rusty Parker Park for a free breakfast provided by Waterbury in Motion.  At 7:15 AM, after everyone samples coffee, juice, bagels, cider doughnuts, and fruit, we will divide up into four groups. One group will walk to Thatcher Brook Primary School, and another will bike to TBPS. Two similar groups will depart for Crossett Brook Middle School.  Each of the four groups will be guided by adult volunteers.  Kids and adults alike can come enjoy the exercise and being outside with friends and neighbors on a lovely spring morning.  This event is part of Thatcher Brook Primary School and Crossett Brook Middle School’s continuing efforts to encourage their students to be physically active.  Waterbury in Motion is an advocacy group of local volunteers working to develop a safe, active, and accessible bike/pedestrian system in Waterbury and the surrounding area.  If you’d like to help with this event, or participate in other similar efforts, please contact Bill Minter atbill@appletreelc.com

Transition to High School Math Camp @ CBMS - With high school just around the corner, wouldn’t it be great if there were a way to review math skills with other kids your age over the summer? Well, now there is! Tegan Garon, a Secondary Education Mathematics major at the University of Vermont’s Honors College, will be hosting a math camp that is aimed at incoming freshmen to review math skills and gain confidence before the start of school. The camp will be tailored to both students who will be entering Algebra 1 and/or Geometry, and will include problem solving and critical thinking activities. Material will be generally presented in an interactive way that will allow participants to work individually and in groups.  The camp will run from Monday to Friday, August 4-8, from 9:30am-noon daily, at CBMS. The camp is open ONLY to incoming 9th grade students. Any ability and confidence level with math is welcome. The cost for the entire week is $95, but a $5 discount will be given to any student who is signed up via email no later than June 1st.  There is a limit of 20 students, so sign up SOON by emailing Tegan at teags3@yahoo.com. You may also email him with any questions or concerns.
