Ponderable: [W]hat is described by the ‘B’ on the report card? That a student mastered the standards, but came late every day? That the student understood half the standards, but persevered to complete every assignment and extra-credit offering? That the student aced major assessments, but was often disrespectful?Joe Feldman, from “Grading Standards Can Elevate Teaching” by Joe Feldman in Education Week, November 12, 2014.

Velocity for Boys @ CBMS!  Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont is proud to announce that Velocity is coming to CBMS this Spring! The goals of the overall program are:
  •  To encourage a healthy, active lifestyle for Middle School boys.
  • To give boys an opportunity to try new fitness activities in a non-competitive, boys-only setting
  • To help boys build confidence and communication skills, as they bond with mentors and other participants
By creating six different activity modules, each with a corresponding lesson, we will give boys a chance to try out an activity without making a major commitment to it. Past activities include mountain biking, break-dancing, fencing, ropes course adventures, frisbee golf, orienteering, cooking, hiking and we’re always looking for new activities.  It is our goal to help each boy find at least one activity he really enjoys, and continue with it, remaining active in the future.
This year, we are offering Velocity at eight Vermont schools, including CBMS. Attached you will find a permission form for the overall program, which requests permission regarding transportation to various sites, a photo release, and some emergency contact information.
The program will tentatively run on Thursdays from 2:30-4:30, beginning April 30th and running through June 4th The program costs $60 per child, and some scholarship money may be available upon request.  Checks should be made to "Velocity BCBSVT", and sent with the permission slip to the CBMS office. Changing the World- (from 8th grader Jackson Greenleaf)  This month in change the world I would like to organize a drive for paper towels and laundry detergent. As usual all donations will go to the central Vermont Humane Society in East Montpelier. It sounds silly but it is so the volunteers can clean the animals and wash towels and blankets that need to be washed. All donations can be put in the box in the CBMS lobby.

Middle School Career Fair: On Wednesday, February 18 from 8:00am-12:00pm, Crossett Brook and Harwood Union Middle Schools will be hosting our first ever career fair.  The career fair will be held at Crossett Brook Middle School.

The career fair is being targeted towards Middle School students, as they are just beginning to think about how their education relates to real life opportunities.  We are currently gathering interested state and local business and industry leaders, service providers, artists, scientists, politicians, athletes, farmers, journalists and others to present information about their fields and places of work. We are asking presenters to engage students with audio, visual, or hands-on displays as Middle Schoolers love to touch, feel, experience, and interact with their learning.

Middle School students sometimes feel disconnected to their education because they do not understand how it supports their future.  They do not yet realize that the process of moving into the world of work begins now with their dreams, recreation, involvement, and volunteering.  We believe that the more we can engage our youth in the community around them, the more successful we will be at transitioning them into prosperous contributing members of our society.

That said, we are hoping to solicit your assistance. We are looking for not only parent presenters, but also parent volunteers to help with set-up, tear down, welcoming, and other aspects. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Tara Cariano at Harwood 882-1118 or through email at tcariano@wwsu.org, or Jennifer Hempey at CBMS at 244-6100 or by e-mail jhempey@wwsu.org.  Please contact us by January 23rd if you are willing to participate.  If you decide to participate as a presenter, it will be important to convey two main pieces of relevant information at the Career Fair:
  1. How the student’s current education positions them for work in this field?
  2. What path a student might take to pursue this career?
We hope that presenters will convey the message to students that their education is a relevant and important investment in their future, and that there is a wealth of opportunities waiting for them.  If you or your business is interested in presenting at this career fair, please complete the form on the Crossett Brook Middle School web page.

We will contact you as we draw closer to the event, to confirm your participation as either a volunteer or presenter, and to update you on specific details.  Thank you in advance for considering this event.  With your participation, we know it will be a great success!

The discussion on Thursday, January 8th has been organized and will be led exclusively by students in the Introduction to Philosophy class at Harwood.  Students, faculty, community   and school board members have been invited and will work together in small groups to discuss such questions as " Is it ever okay to lie?" "What are the qualities of a  hero?"' What is courage?" “ Can one ever be too curious?” and other timeless questions. Refreshments will be provided.  All interested parents and community members are invited! We hope that you will join us for a lively evening of discussion and dialogue.  For questions and more information, please contact Katherine Cadwell at kcadwell@wwsu.org
