WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL-SOME REMINDERS Let them stay home or send them to school?? This is an early morning decision many parents are faced with.  There are those times when it is difficult to decide whether to not to send your child to school.  The following guidelines offer you some help in your decision.
*Always keep your child at home if they have an elevated temperature.  Temperatures should be normal for 24 hours (without Tylenol or Ibuprofen) before he/she returns to school.  Children with a temperature of 100 or above cannot stay in school, and parents will be notified to pick them up.
*If your child has vomited or had diarrhea, please keep him/her home until 24 hours after the last episode.
*If your child has any rash that may be disease related or you do not know the cause, check with your family doctor before sending the child to school.
*If your child has eye drainage and the whites of their eyes are pink or red, please take your child to the doctor.  Your child should not be rubbing his eyes if they are infected.  If the cause is from bacteria, your child may return to school after they have been started on antibiotics.
*If your child has a persistent cough, please keep them home
*Strep Throat:  Children need to stay at home for 24 hours after antibiotic treatment begins and they are without a fever.
*Influenza: Children with influenza are typically contagious 1 day before getting ill through 5-7 days after the onset of symptoms.  Please keep your child home for this time period if they are diagnosed with Influenza.
*Please notify the school immediately if your child develops a communicable disease (strep throat, Influenza, chicken pox, head lice, impetigo, scarlet fever, pink eye, pertussis (whooping cough), etc.)
*If your child becomes ill or is injured during the school day, you will be notified so arrangements can be made for your child to be taken home.  Please notify the school if your phone number changes so we can contact you.
*Please read the letters that are sent home by the school nurse.  If there is a communicable disease in your child’s classroom, you will be notified.
   * Children should be dressed appropriately for the season and specific weather.
*To prevent the spread of infection:
o  Use good hand washing
o  Cover the cough
o  Keep your child home if they are sick

Parent Education Workshops in Montpelier - "Guiding Good Choices" to help parents improve family bonding and reduce risk of teenage drug use.
Central Vermont New Directions  Coalition (CVNDC), which serves Montpelier, the surrounding WCSU towns, and Washington County, is pleased to offer the award-winning parenting class Guiding Good Choices on Wednesdays, from March 18th through April 15th, 2015. Guiding Good Choices is a free, five-session workshop that aids parents of fourth through eighth graders. Are you the parent, grandparent, or caregiver of a tween or teen? This class is for you!
The course covers how to set clear guidelines with both positive and negative consequences; how to control and express anger constructively; understanding  the teenage brain; promoting family bonds; and preparing kids with “refusal” skills for that time down the road when trouble may tempt them. It is important to reach kids early--before middle school and before high school are crucial times. Guiding Good Choices has an excellent track record for preventing youth alcohol and drug use and abuse.
Says a local parent who has taken Guiding Good Choices, “If you have kids, you owe it to yourself and your family to take this course.” Many parents feel they don’t have much influence over their child’s behavior, but research shows just the opposite. Parents are the number one influence on their child’s use of substances. In the mid  90s, Dr. David Hawkins and Dr. Richard Catalano of the University of Washington looked at 19 risk factors that affect children in their teenage years. They discovered that parents and other adult caregivers can play a major role in keeping kids on track.
Come learn the skills to keep your child safe and yourself sane! The next Guiding Good Choices workshop for parents and caregivers of fourth through eighth graders is FREE and begins soon:
5 Wednesdays, March 18, 25 and April 1, 8, 15
6:00-8:00 PM
Main Street Middle School in Montpelier
Childcare  provided with reservations
Space is limited and pre-registration is required

We would love to have the medical field represented in some way!  So I am putting out a last minute request to any parents who are part of the medical field who might be able to lend your expertise on short notice.  Here is a link to a letter outlining presenter goals, which will give you an idea of what/how to present.  The style of the Fair is casual and conversational.  No large presentations are necessary. Please contact me, Jennifer Hempey, at CBMS if you are interested in volunteering.  I can be reached at 244-6100 or via e-mail at jhempey@wwsu.org.   Thank you!

Ponderable: Perkins likes to tell the story of Mahatma Gandhi losing one of his sandals as he boarded a moving train in India. There wasn’t time to retrieve the sandal on the ground, and without hesitation, Gandhi took off his other sandal and threw it toward the first. Asked by a colleague what he was thinking, Gandhi said one sandal wouldn’t do him any good, but two would certainly help someone else. Gandhi “showed wisdom about what to keep and what to let go of,” says Perkins. “Those are both central questions for education as we choose for today’s learners the sandals they need for tomorrow’s journey.” from “What’s Worth Learning in School?” by Lory Hough in Ed. Magazine, Winter 2015. www.gse.harvard.edu/ed
