Last March approximately 140 community members, school staff, and students participated in a series of conversations co-facilitated by community members and Harwood Union High School students. These conversations explored the community’s hopes and concerns about education, built shared understanding about our schools' efforts to make sure all of our students are successful, and generated insights and recommendations to guide future work. The Community Coalition that planned the community conversations continues to meet in order to provide a forum for leadership and community engagement in our schools. Why is CBMS not allowing Chromebooks to be brought home?  Currently, CBMS has a 1:1 technology program, in which every CBMS student has access to a Chromebook to use during the school day.  The CBMS Staff has weighed the potential pros and cons of allowing these devices to come home after school, and have come to the conclusion for the time being to keep these devices at school.  Reasons for this include: the potential for forgetfulness (ie forgetting to bring the device to school), battery management (ie forgetting to charge the device and leaving the charging cable at home), damage (ie dropping the device in the bus aisle), and screen overload (ie sending yet another screen into your home).  We are still looking closely at this topic, collecting more data on the "7:45am-2:30pm" use of our Chromebooks, and how learning might be enhanced by a "24/7" program.  Stay tuned!

Harwood Union Unified School District Board Director:  There is an opening for a new member on the newly formed HUUSD Board.  The HUUSD is organizing to operate our schools starting on July 1, 2017.  The Board currently meets every 2 weeks for 2-3 hours and will have responsibility for the budget and policies of the newly formed district.  The Waterbury Town School Board seeks interested candidates and will conduct interviews and appoint a new school director on Thursday, November 17th at 7:45 am in the Thatcher Brook Primary School conference room.  The appointee to this position serves until the next election, so we expect interested candidates will commit to running for this 3 year position come January 2017.  Candidates should submit an email and resume outlining your interest and qualifications to the Town Board chair, Reed McCracken by November 14th .  Please submit via email to: reedmccracken@comcast.net. For questions about the position contact: Alex Thomsen, HUUSD Board member, alexhthomsen@gmail.com.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 8!  This day could once again could provide a big boost to the Waterbury Area Food Shelf. This is the time of the year when supplies are low and the need is increasing as cold weather approaches. We are asking schools, churches and organizations to help get the word out to voters to bring an item for the food shelf when they cast their vote. Polls are open from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Voting for Waterbury voters will take place in the gym at Thatcher Brook Primary School. Volunteers will be there to collect canned goods, non-perishable food items or cash.
