Join us for the next Community Socrates Café - Joslin Memorial Library in Waitsfield - Monday January 30 - 6:30- 8:00 PM - Discussion Question: Why Are We Afraid of People Who Are Different?  A Socrates Café is an opportunity for dialogue about timeless and timely questions that all human beings deal with in their lives. Rather than being a debate or a discussion, a Socrates Café is a dialogue where participants are encouraged to listen to each other and to learn from one another. This form of discourse- and its focus on the search for knowledge- comes from Socrates, who observed that, "Wisdom Begins in Wonder." These gatherings are open to all members of the community, regardless of age, experience or background. Harwood students who are experienced in leading Socratic Dialogues will facilitate the discussions. This will be the first Socrates Café to be held at the Joslin library. The library is designed to bring diverse community members together: a public, centrally located space that by definition belongs to and welcomes the entire community. Inviting students into the library to lead a community exercise for all ages represents not only the Joslin Library’s commitment to working with other community organizations, but also the library’s tradition of honoring the experiences, knowledge and contributions of all members of the community. The focus on searching for knowledge inherent in the Socrates Café format manifests the mission of libraries throughout history. The specific question of the January 30th café, with its emphasis on exploring issues that are important to people of all ages embodies the library’s commitment to lifelong learning and to being a space and organization that champion’s ideas and creativity.  Community members of all ages are invited, and refreshments will be provided. For questions and more information, please contact Joy Worland, Joslin Librarian, at or Katherine Cadwell, Harwood faculty member at

5-week Parenting Course, focused on improving family bonding and reducing the risk of teenage drug use.  Click here for details.
