CBMS is a no "Phones/Personal Devices Space" from 7:30am - 2:30pm. Starting from the first day of school, phones and personal devices that are brought to school will need to be kept in lockers from 7:30am-2:30pm. We instituted this rule in April of 2017, after a valiant but unsuccessful effort to try to incorporate phones and personal devices into the learning at CBMS. Recent research on addition to phones and personal devices has supported this decision, and we are thus heading into the 17/18 school year with this limitation in effect. Consequences for disrespecting this rule include:

  • If school staff see a phone/device during school hours, we will ask your child for it. If he/she gives it over willingly, we will take it to the office and your child can pick it up at 2:30.
  • If your child gives the staff member a hard time before handing the phone/device over, then the parent will need to pick up the phone/device in the office.
  • If your child refuses to hand over the phone/device, your child will need to serve an in-school, half day suspension on that school day.
  • Subsequent refusals to hand over the phone/device will result in increased days of in or out of school suspension.
All CBMS students will still have access to school-issued technology, including Chromebooks. While it may seem that disallowing personal devices will make it harder to communicate with your child during the school day, you still have two easy and good options on this: 1) Your child’s school e-mail account, and 2) Dona and Shannon in the office are always available via phone and e-mail. We will be continuing to look hard at our approach to this topic as the year unfolds, and we hope to engage student voices in this topic early on in the school year.
