Middle School Volleyball Club for 5th-8th graders - Volleyball is the 4th most popular sport in the world and is also the most popular girls high school sport in the United States. It is so popular that many high schools in Vermont are starting to add boys teams, too. Mark your calendars for May 8th from 5-7 PM for the first meeting of the CBMS Volleyball Club. We will have a short organizational meeting for parents and students at the first session, then get on with the fun! All interested HUUSD Middle School boys and girls, grade 5-8, are invited. We also invite parents with volleyball experience to attend. The club will meet every Tuesday from May 8th until the end of the school year, from 5-7pm. Harwood varsity coach David Stapleton, along with varsity players and experienced parents, will focus on teaching the fundamental skills and rules of the game. We also hope to continue to meet in the fall/winter, and to eventually assemble a team to participate in the Chittenden County Middle School March Madness Volleyball League in March/April 2019. Students interested in playing and experienced parents interested in volunteering can contact Dona Culver at

Softball Club for 7th and 8th graders:  FamilyID has the MS Softball Club open for registration at this link:
You MUST be registered on FamilyID to participate, as well as have a current Physical on file. Scott Hunter will be running this club for Harwood.  This club will begin on Monday, April 30th, from 3:30-4:50pm (to make the late buses). From the end of school to 3:30pm, the students should be in the cafeteria or senior cafe working on homework until it's time for practice.   It will run every Monday/Wednesday/Friday at the same time. The Varsity Softball program has agreed to share the field with the MS Club. On instances where there is a game happening that day, I will work with Scott to find another location for the team to workout that day (indoors or at another field not being used).

School Nutrition Employee Week: May 7-11 - Between preparing healthy meals for America’s students, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, school nutrition professionals are true heroes.  On Friday, May 4, 2018, we will kick off School Nutrition Employee Week (May 7-11) with a bang, when we celebrate the 6th Annual School Lunch Hero Day! School Lunch Hero Day is a chance to showcase the difference school nutrition professionals make for every child who comes through the cafeteria.  School Lunch Hero Day provides you with the perfect opportunity to recognize the hardworking professionals in your school cafeterias.  SNA has partnered with author Jarrett J. Krosoczka, of the “Lunch Lady” book series, to remind everyone—directors, managers, parents, students, and school staff—that school nutrition employees are superheroes that deserve some recognition.  You can check out Jarrett Krosoczka’s Ted Talk about School Lunch Hero Day by clicking here!

  2. We voted to approve the minutes from April 11, 2017 meeting with noted edits.
  3. We voted to accept board warrants which had been pre-approved according to board process.
  4. We asked the Central Office to create HUUSD-board-specific email addresses for all board members.
  5. We discussed including a code of ethics, code of conduct, a feedback mechanism, and feedback skills for all board members at the next board retreat.
  6. We voted to include into official board minutes the letters of finding from the Office of the Attorney General and from the State Auditor regarding complaints filed about alleged actions of school district employees and school board members.
  7. We voted to approve the reassignment of Duane Pierson to the Assistant Principal for Harwood Middle School, and to open a search for the Moretown Elementary School Principal position.
  8. We voted to schedule a follow up executive session for the purpose of Superintendent evaluation on May 16 at 5:30 – 6:30 pm, after which our board meeting will continue in open session.
At this meeting, the board entered into two executive sessions related to: 1) the hiring of the administrator at Harwood Union High School/Middle School and 2) superintendent evaluation

In addition, the board was given refresher training on Open Meeting Law (OML)/Public Records by Sue Ceglowski, legal counsel at the Vermont School Board Association VSBA. This was helpful and important information, and was specifically put on the agenda in response to allegations made against the board. (Note the meeting was originally scheduled for winter 2018 but had to be rescheduled due to the presenter being ill).

You can watch the full meeting at:

It is our hope to send updates and previews of each HUUSD Board meeting in the future. Thank you for your continued support and engagement. Our next meeting is Wednesday, May 9 from 6 - 9:30 pm. Time will be spent touring Crossett Brook Middle School (CBMS) and Harwood Union Middle School (HUMS), and the remainder of the meeting will be held in the Harwood Union High School library.
